1. Publish sooner
I hope that this book can be published before the energy boom degrades the resource. Deposits of natural gas have attracted dozens of well sites that threaten to appear on the rim of the corridor. Suspicious foam on the river and other possible consequences of the rapid development will soon spoil Desolation. In addition, the increase of rafting permits threaten the west side of the canyon. Last July, I launched with eight other parties in one day- a "scientific" group and a "local option" group were in excess of the usual allocation- crowding some of the narrower areas of the canyon. I ran my first trip down the river in 1974. Since then, I have seen conditions slowly deteriorate. In the last four years, the deterioration has been far more evident and rapid. Please save this valuable wild area.

2. All the rivers are changing
Desolation Canyon has always been my favorite for the reason that it hasn't changed much through the decades. But it has changed. A timeless river has changed in one human life span. Amazing. I think about all those federal mandates promising to keep these special places intact for future generations to enjoy and realize how empty these promises really are.
