Many scientists consider the Colorado River to be the most scientifically studied river in the world. We certainly agree. However, for all the science that has been completed on the Colorado, it still remains the most endangered river in North America.
We also understand that the Rio Grande and the Sacramento/San Jouquin river basins are just as degraded as the Colorado. At least, for now, the Rio Grande and the Sacramento are given the decency to flow, though meagerly, into the ocean.
Note about the photo: Charles Dolittle Walcott studied the Precambrian rock types of the Grand Canyon and succeeded John Wesley Powell as the director of the USGS.
